Patapsco

The tug Patapsco is the first in a line of Patapsco-class tugs.  She was designed by Frank Basile of Entech & Associates, and built in Houma, Louisiana by the Thoma-Sea Boat Builders.  Completed in April 2004 and christened the following June at a Grande Celebration at Vane Fleet Headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland, the Patapsco is 95’ long, 34’ abeam, and 15’ deep.  Her gross tonnage is 99 tons.  She is powered by two CAT 3516, 2100 horsepower engines with Kort nozzles, and maintains running speeds of better than 12 knots.  Featuring a model bow and square stern, her fuel capacity is approximately 90,000 gallons.  Potable water capacity is approximately 9,000 gallons.  With accommodations for seven crew members, the Patapsco is dedicated to 50-class tank barges on the coastwide trade.

In the fall of 2004, the Patapsco won the famed Great Tugboat Race on New York’s Hudson River.  The annual competition draws vessels from many major tug outfits, and is sponsored by the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum.
