Roanoke

The tug Roanoke was designed by Chauncey Horton for the Interstate Oil Company in 1967, and built -- alongside her sister tug, the Pamlico -- by Main Iron Works in Houma, Louisiana.  The Roanoke and Pamlico are heavily built inland riverboats with open water capabilities. In the late 60s, the Roanoke and Pamlico were the new generation of 2000 horsepower towboats, designed to replace the smaller "Interstate Transporter" class towboat.

Vane purchased the Roanoke in 1999 from Maritrans, Inc., then replaced the original White Superior 8-cylinder turbocharged diesels with EMD engines.  Vane also overhauled the Roanoke’s gears, rudders, shafts, and wheels, and installed new alarm systems, piping, and bottom plate.  She is 97’ long, 33’ wide, and 9’ deep, and operates primarily in the Ports of Philadelphia and Baltimore, and the surrounding bays and waterways.
