M/T Duff

The motor tanker Duff took eleven months and at a cost of $80,000 in 1971 at Blount shipyard in Warren, Rhode Island.  The first motor tanker to have been commissioned by Vane, the 42,000-gallon (or 1,000 barrel) tanker greatly expanded Vane’s light-oil fueling business.  In comparison, Vane’s larger barges carry 6,090,000 gallons (140,000 barrels) of oil.  The motor tanker Duff is named for company president
C. Duff Hughes who, at age 13, made the maiden voyage from her Rhode Island shipyard to Baltimore.  Despite severe weather and heavy seas, the Duff averaged 11.2 knots over 480 nautical miles, taking two and a half days for the trip. The Duff was officially welcomed to Vane Brothers at a Grande Christening Celebration on September 9, 1971.

She weighs 73 gross tons, and measures 58’ long, 19’ abeam, and 7 deep.
